What is AIDS?

A group of diseases caused by a process of reduction in the human body´s defences on contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

 

What does 'seropositive' mean?

'Seropositive' or 'carrier' are terms used to describe persons infected with HIV who have not developed any disease.

 

How is it transmitted?

HIV is transmitted through the blood, semen and vaginal secretions of a person who is a carrier or is ill, in the following situations:

- During sexual relations (anal, vaginal or oral) without a condom.

- Sharing syringes, needles or any other sharp instrument which has been in contact with infected.

- From an infected mother to her son or daughter, during the pregnancy, the birth or breastfeeding.

 

It can be avoided!

- By using condoms in all sexual relationships.

- By not sharing syringes or items that cut or puncture.

- By avoiding the possibility of pregnancy in infected women.

 

VIH/Sida no se contagia:

- In everyday social relationships, in the workplace or in schools.

- Via the saliva, sweat or tears.

- Via coughing, embracing or shaking hands.

- Via petting, mouth to mouth kissing or reciprocal masturbation.

- While sharing public facilities, swimming pools, showers, lavatories, transport, restaurants, cafeterias, bars, etc.

- Via mosquito bites or other insect stings.
